چکیده
The work presented in this paper is a part of the iCHEM STREP project, which aims at developing a new class of technology for biosynthetic infochemical communication by exploiting recent advances in the understanding of both pheromone biosynthesis pathways and the detection of molecules in the insect nervous system. We present the design and development of a novel surface acoustic wave (SAW) biosensor system and report preliminary results using a functionalised coating (SF9 whole cells), to detect secondary cellular responses triggered when 12.5μM of octopamine hydrochloride, an invertebrate neurotransmitter, binds to the endogenously expressed octopamine receptors present on the cell.

page 156 Abstract: Already proven in a wide array of industrial applications, surface acoustic wave devices (SAWs) also have been demonstrated to hold substantial potential in the biosensor arena. Currently, SAW resonators coated with a biolayer can distinguish specific biomolecules in both liquid and vapor phases. By incorporating periodic perturbations in the design of SAW delay line, we were...
متن کاملSurface Generated Acoustic Wave Biosensors for the Detection of Pathogens: A Review
This review presents a deep insight into the Surface Generated Acoustic Wave (SGAW) technology for biosensing applications, based on more than 40 years of technological and scientific developments. In the last 20 years, SGAWs have been attracting the attention of the biochemical scientific community, due to the fact that some of these devices - Shear Horizontal Surface Acoustic Wave (SH-SAW), S...

In this Commentary, we discuss the paper Quantitative Determination of Size and Shape of Surface-Bound DNA Using an Acoustic Wave Sensor [Tsortos et al., Biophys. J. 94(7), 2706-2715 (2008)]. The paper under discussion presents a novel theory that uses the response of a Shear-Horizontal Surface Acoustic Wave device to characterize surface-attached double- and triple-strand DNA. The authors rela...
